Domain Name Server

Windows Server domain - A Windows Server domain or Windows NT Domain is a logical group of computers running versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system that share a central directory database. This central database or "Directory" contains the user accounts and security information for the resources in that domain.

Primary Domain Controller - A Primary Domain Controller (PDC) is a server computer in a pre-Windows 2000 NT server Domain. A domain is a concept used in NT server operating systems whereby a user may be granted access to a number of computer resources with the use of a single username and password combination.

Domain controller - On Windows Server Systems, the domain controller (DC) is the server that responds to security authentication requests (logging in, checking permissions, etc.) within the Windows Server domain.

Backup Domain Controller - In Windows NT 4 server domains, the Backup Domain Controller (BDC) is a computer that has a copy of the user accounts database. Unlike the accounts database on the Primary Domain Controller (PDC), the BDC database is a read only copy.
